Symptoms that Accompany Knee Pain

The most common complaints concurrent with knee pain include the following:

  • Weakness or inability to place full weight on one leg
  • Inability to fully extend the knee
  • Stiffness or swelling around the knee
  • Noises when you move or bend the need, such as popping or crunching
  • Difficulty carrying out normal daily activities, such as walking, sitting, or getting out of bed
  • Inflammation or being warm to the touch

If you notice any pain, discomfort, or difference in your knee’s function, even if it’s not listed here, you should see a chiropractor.

Causes of Knee Pain

The causes of knee pain can vary as widely as the symptoms. The following are some of the most common:

  • Bursitis: Bursitis is a common condition in which the cushions between your joints are irritated. Bending, kneeling, falling, and overusing the knee cause irritation.
  • Dislocation: Sometimes, an accident or injury can cause the kneecap to slip out of place, which causes swelling. It also leads to a lot of pain and discomfort.
  • Meniscal tear: If you have injured your knee, there is a chance that you have ripped the cartilage. Once ripped, the cartilage can get stuck in your knee joint. It causes pain, swelling, and the feeling of “catching” when you try to move.
  • IT band syndrome: The IT band, or iliotibial band, runs from the outer part of the knee to the hip. This band of tissue can become inflamed and cause pain to the outside of the knee.
  • Patellar tendinitis: This is typically caused by overdoing exercise, which causes inflammation in the tendon between your shinbone and knee.
  • Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis usually occurs in those over age 40. It is caused by the general wear and tear of the joints, causing them to swell when you are active.

How to Achieve Knee Pain Relief

There are several methods to relieving knee pain, which include ice and heat therapy, elevating the knee, stretches, rest, and anti-inflammatory medications. However, these should not be used as long-term solutions.

If your knee hurts on a regular basis, you should see a chiropractor. They can help determine the cause of the knee pain, address the root cause, and develop a treatment plan that’s right for you.

In some cases, your chiropractor will have you continue resting your knee, use heat therapy, and other solutions mentioned above.
